About the Artist

Born in Jackson, Mississippi, Charles Carraway is a 1979 graduate of Delta State University, where he received a BFA in graphic design. He pursued further education at Louisiana Tech University, which gave him the opportunity to study architecture and design in Rome, Italy. Carraway received his Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1983. Currently residing in Terry, Mississippi, he is an Associate Professor of Art in painting, drawing, and printmaking, as well as the department chair at Jackson State University. Carraway is a realist painter, and his work can be found in both corporate and private collections across the United States.

About his work, Charles says, “For me, painting is a means of suspending time, an abstraction of light and space. I am interested in how light and space can be manipulated to create a unique sense of what is real and abstract at the same time. To paraphrase a comment once made by Giorgio Morandi, who perhaps said it best, ‘Nothing is more abstract than reality . . .’”

I am interested in how light and space can be manipulated to create a unique sense of what is real and abstract at the same time.
